2022 Honda Civic Type R prototype spotted

We all know that Honda is introducing a new Civic compact for the 2022 model year, but to date, we've only seen the sedan and hatchback versions.

Sporty Si and Type R models are also in the works, and the prototype has been spotted twice. This time, we've got some juicy video of the interior and exterior to go on.

Even though Honda has been mum on performance details, the car is believed to employ a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. We expect a 6-speed manual and front-wheel drive to be standard. There's a good chance we'll see an electric-powered version appearing throughout the model's life.

We're big fans of the outgoing Civic Type R. The newer Civic models have a more robust base than their predecessors, which should help the new Type R shine even brighter.

Distinctive Honda Civic Type R styling

The prototype was spotted making a pit stop at a petrol station in the most recent set of images, giving us a closer look at the outside. There is a better look at its ventilated hood, front-end vents, and lightweight wheels with red Brembo brakes.

Adding to the sportier look are a distinctive mesh grille and badges denoting the Type R trim level. There are also aerodynamic side skirts, a large rear wing, and a distinctive rear bumper with three exhaust pipes in the centre of the bumper on the top-of-the-line model.

Inside, we see a familiar dashboard with honeycomb mesh decor and a 9-inch freestanding infotainment system, which is to be anticipated given the car's heritage as a hatchback. Either a 7-inch or a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster should connect to it.

It retains a lot of the Civic S's essential components but adds specific performance-oriented options. The red sport seats with the "Type R" badge on the headrests are the most striking addition. Red seat belts and contrast stitching on the centre console tie the two together.

Availability

The Civic hatchback comes from a facility in Greensburg, Indiana, while the sedan is made in Alliston, Canada. This is the first Civic hatchback to be produced in the United States. This means that, unlike the previous model, the new Type R will be produced in the United States.

Honda has previously announced that the Civic Type R will go on sale next year.
